Celebrate Purim by chanting the Biblical Scroll of Esther
Happy Adar! Today is the first day of the Hebrew month of Adar, about which our Sages teach Mi’she’nikh’nas Adar mar’bim be’simha — When Adar begins, we enlarge our joy.
Reason being that Adar is the month of Purim, and Purim is cause for extra joy. Purim is our people’s paradigmatic episode of “victory snatched from the jaws of defeat.” The reference is, of course, to the Jewish community of ancient Persia, condemned to annihilation at the urging of wicked Haman, saved by the heroism of Mordecai and his niece, Esther.
That story will be heard in its entirety in just under two weeks, when Jews around the globe celebrate Purim by chanting the Biblical Scroll of Esther. Mark you calendars for our celebration at Ohev Sholom, at 7 pm Saturday, March 11, and again the following morning at 9:30. In the meantime, Be Happy!
