Celebrate Hanuka and Support Masorti
We’ll kindle the first candle of Hanuka Tuesday evening. We’ll enjoy festive foods and exchange gifts. We’ll recall the bravery and conviction of the Macabees of yore, who in 165 BCE overcame an overlord who outlawed our ancestral heritage. Their victory established the primacy of freedom of religion.
How ironic, then, that nowadays it is precisely in the State of Israel that freedom to practice Judaism – in particular the liberal Judaism of the Conservative and Reform Movements – remains severely restricted. In the year since last Hanuka, the clamps have substantially tightened; Israel’s government recently capitulated to pressure from the ultra-orthodox and reneged on its agreement to develop the southern extension of the Kotel (the Western Wall) for use by liberal Jewish worshipers.
Liberal Judaism in Israel deserves our active support. Conservative Judaism in Israel goes by the name Masorti. Please click on the link below, to make your donation to the Masorti Foundation. Your generosity is much appreciated. Happy Hanuka!
